Local Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) stands paramount for businesses aiming to establish a robust online presence within their geographic locality. With the digital landscape continuously evolving, understanding the intricacies of Local SEO is indispensable for ensuring your business remains visible and competitive.
Local SEO, a strategy pivotal for enhancing online visibility, enables businesses to appear in local search results for relevant queries. This practice is particularly crucial for companies serving specific areas or regions, as it directly connects them with the local audience actively seeking their products or services.
In a nutshell, local SEO involves targeting keywords to generate local customers.
This process includes optimising the business’s website and its content, including local keywords and geographical locations. For example, a bakery in Manchester would benefit from keywords like “bakery in Manchester” or “best bread in Manchester,” ensuring it appears prominently when local customers search for these terms. Generally, people love to support local businesses and their local economy so most services and even products people will add a location at the end of their search query.
Now let’s consider competition. If you’re a generic company seeking to rank for cities and ‘UK’ type keywords, then well, you’ll be competing with every other company. If you’re in a niche industry then maybe you can competitively rank for those keywords!
But to beat competition, you may have to go more granular, for instance why stop at London? When you could go deeper into boroughs, specific areas, towns and villages you service that could have search demand?
So I recommend considering your service area (maybe it’s a 10 mile radius around your location?) you could then get chat gpt to write down every single possible county, place, city, town, village and hamlet around there. Then all you need to do is add the keyword in front of that and you have yourself a massive list of possible location keywords that you can put into Google keyword planner to see if there’s any search volume and find keywords.
E.g.
Once you’ve added them in keyword planner you can export it all as an excel file, remove the columns which aren’t needed so your left with keyword and search volume. Then you can add a filter to display only cells that have numbers higher than 0.
Congratulations you’ve now formulated a local SEO strategy!
(You can also steal keywords at competitors, as they would have likely already done the above steps).
In today’s digital-first world, local SEO is more than a marketing tactic; it’s a necessity. With the majority of consumers turning to online searches to find local businesses and services, appearing in top local search results can significantly impact a business’s foot traffic and sales. Local SEO not only helps businesses reach their target audience but also enhances their credibility and trustworthiness, influencing consumer decision-making.
A pivotal aspect of Local SEO is the creation and optimisation of local business listings, particularly on Google My Business (now Google Business Profile). These listings provide essential information about a business, including its location, hours of operation, contact details, and services offered. Accurate and detailed listings improve a business’s search visibility and provide potential customers with the information they need to engage with the business.
This is absolutely a no brainer for local businesses, if you’re a local business and not on this, you should seriously rethink your life. I mean it’s completely free, and links with Google maps that will direct users straight to your local business.
If you want to appear in the local map results the best way is through reviews. Would you use a business that has 0-10 reviews or would you prefer to go to a business that has 50+ raving reviews? Hopefully the latter 😅 so having reviews establishes social proof to users as well as search engines. Search engines will prefer to send users to somewhere that has been tried and tested rather than not. Remeber, search engines only want to deliver a good experience to their users, and they’d prefer not to risk sending customers to a business that has bad or 0 reviews.
Ensure your business is listed in local directories and citation sites with consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) information. This consistency boosts your business’s credibility and helps improve your local search rankings.
Local directories you should consider joining for free:
Optimise on-page elements like title tags, meta descriptions, and content to include local keywords and location details. Ensure your website is user-friendly and mobile-responsive, as these factors also influence your local search ranking.

To further refine your Local SEO efforts and stand out in competitive markets, consider these advanced strategies that can enhance your visibility and engagement with local audiences.
Focus on acquiring backlinks from reputable local websites, such as community portals, local news sites, and other businesses in your area. These locally relevant backlinks signal to search engines that your business is an integral part of the local community, thereby improving your local search rankings.
Implement structured data markup, or schema, on your website to provide search engines with explicit information about your business, including your products, services, and local relevance. This can enhance your visibility in local search results and enable rich snippets, making your listing more appealing to potential customers.
Local business Schema is a great way to tell search engines that you are a local business.
If users are out and about, they will be searching for things on their phones (definitely not Desktops 😅). So make sure that you’re website works well on Mobile!! Make sure it has good mobile scores on Pagespeed Insights and that it works and looks professional (possibly better than it looks on desktop). When I do website design, I usually build it in mobile view as most users are on mobiles these days! Of course it does depend on your industry, some things you may find that most users are on desktop, and you can find that all out in Google Analytics in the tech section. But for local businesses, I guarantee the majority of users will be on Mobile.
Create and share content that resonates with your local audience, such as blog posts about local events, community activities, or local market trends. This not only establishes your business as a local authority but also increases engagement and shares, further boosting your Local SEO.
To sustain and enhance local search rankings, businesses must not only implement Local SEO strategies but also continuously monitor and adapt to the analytics and insights derived from their efforts. Understanding how to measure success and make data-driven decisions is key to maintaining a competitive edge in local search.
Identify and monitor essential KPIs that reflect your Local SEO success, such as search ranking for local keywords, website visits from local search, conversion rates from local leads, and the volume of local business listing interactions. These metrics offer insights into the effectiveness of your Local SEO strategy and highlight areas for improvement.
Leverage tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and location-specific analytics within your Google Business Profile to gain a comprehensive view of your local SEO performance. These tools help track user behaviour, search rankings, and engagement with your business listings, providing a wealth of data to inform your strategy.
The local search landscape is dynamic, with frequent changes in search engine algorithms, competitor activities, and consumer behaviours. Regularly review and adjust your Local SEO tactics in response to these changes to ensure your business remains visible and relevant in local search results.
Keep an eye on your competitors’ Local SEO strategies. Analyse their keyword targeting, local content, and backlink profile to identify opportunities where your business can gain a competitive advantage. Emulating successful tactics and identifying gaps in their strategies can provide a roadmap for your Local SEO enhancements.
Local SEO is not a set-and-forget strategy; it requires ongoing attention and refinement. Regularly update your website and local listings with fresh content and accurate information, adjust your keyword strategy based on performance data, and continually seek opportunities to enhance your local online presence.
As the digital landscape evolves, so too must your Local SEO strategy to stay ahead of the curve and remain competitive in local search rankings. Anticipating future trends and adapting your approach accordingly is key to long-term success. Here’s how you can future-proof your Local SEO efforts:
Stay informed about emerging technologies and trends, such as voice search, artificial intelligence (AI), and augmented reality (AR), that are likely to impact local search behaviours. Optimising for voice search, for example, involves targeting more conversational keywords and phrases that people are likely to use when speaking to digital assistants.
Google’s algorithm updates increasingly prioritise user experience, including page loading speed, mobile-friendliness, and intuitive navigation. Ensuring your website offers a stellar user experience is crucial for maintaining and improving your local search rankings.
Social media platforms can significantly enhance your Local SEO by driving local traffic to your website and increasing brand awareness. Engage with your local community on social media through location-based posts, hashtags, and interactions to bolster your local online presence. Most communities have local community pages! So share exciting news to your local community.
Local businesses must prioritise Local SEO to ensure they are discoverable to their local target audience. (What’s the point targeting a national audience if you only have one shop in a small town?). The strategies outlined in this guide—from keyword optimisation and Google Business Profile enhancement to advanced tactics like mobile optimisation and local content creation—serve as a roadmap for businesses aiming to dominate their local markets.
However, Local SEO is not a set-and-forget solution; it demands ongoing attention and adaptation. Staying attuned to the evolving trends in search technology and consumer behaviour, and continuously refining your Local SEO practices, will enable your business to stay relevant and competitive.
